"Cammy"

"Cammy" is a short film I wrote and directed, featuring actress Gretchen Hall as a woman struggling to convince others she has a serious illness but everyone -- her mother, her doctor... her husband who cheated on her -- believes the problem isn't actually medical.

That's the plot, but what it's really about is a woman who, when she can't get anyone to believe her concerns, starts to doubt herself. All too often too many women have trouble being taken seriously no matter what the subject is -- people may hear them, but not truly listen. But I didn't want to make a film where it's instantly easy to side with the protagonist and immediately see their point of view; I wanted the audience to view her as the other characters in the film view her, and then later, when the movie's over, feel the complicity of hearing someone but not fully listening to them. Because, in the end, it's not about if Cammy's right or not about her illness -- it's about her being heard and and not being told how she should really feel.

Below are some photos from the film.

A shout out to Bill Pace, @ScripTeach, for #CammyTheFilm. CAMMY, like Bill's terrific feature, CHARMING BILLY, is handled with an intelligent, compelling restraint. It's wonderful!

I thought it was fucking GREAT!

On every level. The concept, the dialogue, the actors, the choice of shots, the rhythm, the directing. Gretchen Hall was tremendous; the scene where she walks down the long staircase in the atrium on the phone was brilliant in its staging. Terrific when the two girls appear, tap dancing. Then the husband. Perfect!

Another part I really loved about "Cammy" was the very start, with the doctor’s VO. Perfect! Sucked me right in … and established the theme. And the ending was devastating.

Truly, of all the films, books, etc. that people have asked me to watch or read, "Cammy" is the best. So true. Five stars.
